“How in the world did you end up in Evansville, Indiana?”
That’s a question that a lot of new residents get from the natives around here. We don’t mean anything negative in asking – quite the contrary. Evansville is a great place to live and work and raise a family. But we’re genuinely curious about those who choose to move here. Our midsize city doesn’t have some of the big-city draws of a place like Indianapolis or Nashville.
As it turns out, one of the biggest reasons newcomers choose to make Evansville their hometown is the connections we forge with others in our community. Evansville is filled with opportunities to engage with numerous causes and needs, both locally and on a larger scale.
Buying Local
Evansville and the surrounding area is home to 96% of our staff here at Motivating Systems. We’re a mix of born-and-raised and transplanted-and-thriving, and we all have one thing in common. We love to be involved in our community. We participate in community events, support local businesses, and donate time and money to charitable organizations.
Our office location in downtown Evansville means that we’re in walking distance of many restaurants, shops, and entertainment. It’s not uncommon for a group of Motivators to walk to the local farmer’s market or eat lunch from a local food truck. Often, we purchase fresh goods from a local vendor. Not only do we support our local vendors in this way, but we also earn points for community involvement through our Workplace Rewards app.
Supporting our local economy is important to us. We believe that doing business with locally-owned companies makes our community stronger. Our quarterly meetings feature lunches catered from area restaurants. In fact, it’s not unusual for us to order in breakfast or lunch from local restaurants when we meet a sales goal or when the weather is bad. We order office supplies from local suppliers and purchase marketing materials and swag from local vendors whenever possible. And for those of us who must travel on behalf of Motivating Systems, we opt for the convenience of our local regional airport over traveling to a larger city’s airport a couple of hours away.
We believe that these actions help to strengthen our local economy and make Evansville a better place.
Giving Back
As our team has grown bigger, we’ve found that many of us support various charitable organizations. It’s never hard to get our coworkers to join us in supporting the causes that are important to us. We have participated in several events to support local non-profits, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Indiana, Autism Evansville, and Borrowed Hearts Foundation.
A pleasant side effect from such involvement is that the energy in the office goes up. We spend time talking about the event and the fun that was involved. We also share photos on our Motivating Systems Facebook page. With every event we participate in, we develop new and deeper relationships with one another. These connections help to make Motivating Systems (and Evansville) a great place to work!
