It’s a common challenge for many businesses – getting employees to submit time cards in a timely manner. Motivating Systems met this challenge in a creative way, and it evolved into a robust employee recognition program that helps to shape our workplace culture.
Workplace Rewards is our Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that helps companies motivate and recognize employees for their efforts. However, it came from humble beginnings: we simply wanted to make sure everyone turned their time cards in on time.
Creating a Points System
Staff members who submitted time cards each week were positively recognized for completing that task and they earned points for their efforts. We added a few other points-worthy goals along the way: bringing in food to share, taking a walk, and participating in company events, just to name a few.
The idea grew from there. Soon, we had a Positivity Post Office, where we could share encouraging notes and thank-yous among ourselves. Then we added Yammer, a social networking service designed specifically for organizations. Given our tech background, the next logical step was to make everything digital. Workplace Rewards was born!
Establishing Workplace Values
At Motivating Systems, we emphasize personal growth as well as professional advancement. We want our staff to take care of their health, develop relationships with one another, and have fun at work. We identified the values that are important to our company: wellness, self-improvement, camaraderie, and accountability, to name a few.
As we developed Workplace Rewards, we took those values and categorized them as follows:

- Be a Great Teammate
- You Matter
- Have Fun
Staff members can demonstrate these values with activities such as going to lunch with a co-worker, bringing in food to share, taking a walk, or helping a co-worker with a project. Through our Workplace Rewards app, we can request recognition for ourselves and for others. The points we earn can be used in raffles during company meetings as well as during our annual auction held during our holiday party.
Creating Positive Workplace Culture
Employee engagement, productivity, and fun all combine to produce a positive workplace culture here at Motivating Systems. Workplace Rewards is a big part of that. We are recognized by participating in work events, theme days, recognizing someone on the social wall, and going to lunch offsite with co-workers. The social wall on the Workplace Rewards app allows for peer-to-peer recognition, which helps to build personal relationships between co-workers. Staff photos in the app mean that new staff members can easily learn names and faces and become immersed in our culture more quickly.
Workplace Rewards reinforces the company’s values and consistently recognizes employees for hard work, success, and for being a part of the company culture. It encourages participation in company events and ties everyone’s work together. Employees feel recognized and appreciated throughout the entire company. In a team environment such as Motivating Systems, this is invaluable. And to think – it all started with turning time cards in on time!
